The Spanish Iberian pigs are not just being kept free on any meadows, quite the contrary! Iberico meat in bellota quality comes from animals that romp around in the so-called dehesas: cork and holm oak groves. There the animals diligently eat the acorns, which give the meat its nutty taste. The 'Bellota' label is only awarded to meat from animals that have reached about 40% of their live weight from acorns and herbs found in the meadows. If only acorns are being fed, the Bellota label may not be used.
