In fact, in 1820, King Wilhelm I introduced some Chinese masked pigs into his domestic pig breeding. The reason for this was the robustness of the animals from the Far East, which also bear the name 'Mohrenköpfle' because of their distinctive head pattern. Through the inbreeding of native pig breeds, the present German domestic pig was finally bred out. This fat breed is characterized by its tender, aromatic meat with a thick layer of bacon on top.
The German domestic pig - an old breed – re-discovered
Exactly this layer of fat led some decades later to the fact that this race almost fell into oblivion. The reason: Customers wanted rather lean meat and other pig breeds were preferred in breeding. The keeping is strictly controlled and is characterized by spacious, bright stables with plenty of fresh air, straw bedding and outdoor exercise facilities. The pigs are being fed exclusively with the farm's own grain, peas and beans. Any additives in the feed and during fattening are strictly prohibited. This is how the excellent meat quality of this old breed is preserved!
